Biography
Rapper Wyclef Jean was born in Haiti. Jean's father, a Nazarene preacher was posted to New York when Jean was nine. Jean's mother gave him his first guitar to hopefully divert his attention from the gangs running rampant in his neighborhood. Jean went on to learn about 15 different instruments while attending Vailsburg High School in Newark, New Jersey. Jean also became fluent in Italian and Spanish, and recorded his hit single, "Gone to November," in eight different languages.
His pride in his heritage has aided many Haitian-Americans to rediscover their own pride in being of Haitian descent. Jean has organized and sponsored benefit concerts in Haiti since 1997. The "Carnival" benefit is intended to help the impoverished and starving people of Haiti. The series got off to a bad start when the money raised during the first concert became "lost."
