Biography
Often called America's greatest living philanthropist, Walter Annenberg was born in Milwaukee during 1908. His father Moses, a poor immigrant from East Prussia, founded what would become the immensely successful Triangle Publications. Educated at the University of Pennsylvania, Walter joined the family business in 1928. He was company vice president when his father was indicted in 1939 for tax evasion and bribery. Annenberg was indicted as well, but the charges against him were dropped. Annenberg became president and chairman of the board of Triangle in 1940. Soon after being paroled, Walter's father died in 1942 and Walter, age 32, inherited Triangle Publications, Inc. He successfully took the company out of debt and away from scandal. Walter soon saw the need for young girl's magazines and started the very profitable Seventeen in 1944.
