Viggo Peter Mortensen, Jr. (born October 20, 1958) is an Danish-American theater and movie actor, poet, musician, photographer and painter. He is best known for his roles in A History of Violence, Hidalgo, Boiling Point and as Aragorn in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings film trilogy.

Background

Mortensen was born in New York City, but when he was two years old he moved with his family to Argentina and lived in South America until age eleven, when his parents divorced and his mother moved back to New York City, and Viggo moved with his father to Copenhagen, Denmark. Viggo and his father eventually went back to the states, and Viggo finished High School. After that, he moved back to Denmark, and became a truckdriver in Esbjerg, Denmark, before, again, eventually moving back to the United States, to pursue an acting career.
