Actress Uma Thurman once described her younger self as "Tall, sandy blonde, with sort of blue eyes, skinny in places, fat in others. An average gal." In fact, Thurman rarely describes herself as anything other than average, refusing to buy into the sex symbol status she has earned as both a model and an accomplished actress, all the while remaining an accessible, down-to-earth person.

Thurman's career began when she moved to New York from Boston at the age of 16. She started as a model for the Click agency, posing for several magazines before crossing over to acting in 1987 for the independent film, Kiss Daddy Goodnight. She gained widespread attention as the seductress in 1988's Dangerous Liaisons, then flexed her acting muscles by starring in the comedy The Adventures of Baron Munchausen just a year later. Her work has appeared on television (Fox's Robin Hood) as well as the big screen, further demonstrating her ability to adapt to almost any medium.
