With a little luck and a truckload full of talent, Tim Burton became one of the most successful filmmakers to come out of the 1980s. His unique ability to astound viewers with his visionary darkness and surround them with characters that seem larger than life has continued to expand the boundaries of creativity. With a half-dozen projects slated for production through 2000, it looks like Burton will be delighting audiences well into the new millennium.

A shy and lonely kid growing up, Burton spent most of his time in front of the television. Early on, he watched cartoons and learned to draw his favorite characters. Soon he began to relate to horror films and the dark imagery that stimulated his imagination. By 1980, his talents were undeniable, and Burton had won a scholarship to attend the California Institute of the Arts. A year later, he was awarded a Disney fellowship and started work as an apprentice animator.
