The little girl with the blazing forehand and awesome backhand, Steffi Graf, started playing tennis at the age of six, and turned professional at the age of 13. It took her three years to win a tournament. This first victory would be against Chris Evert at Hilton Head in 1986. She went on to win her next five consecutive tournaments. Her first Grand Slam victory came when she defeated Martina Navratilova at the 1987 French Open. This victory would begin a remarkable victorious career for three generations.

During her career she's won 22 Grand Slam singles titles, second only to Margaret Court's 24, and 107 WTA Tour singles titles. She spent 377 weeks as the number one player in the world, a record, including an unmatched 186 straight.

Graf's achievements did not come without personal dilemma's. Her father was slapped with a paternity suit and charged with tax evasion for not paying taxes on Graf's tennis earnings. She has also been plagued with numerous injuries. In 1997, she had surgery on her knee. The doctors thought it would end her career, but she bounced back after almost a year layoff with her trademark forehand and her famous backhand.

Her last Grand Slam came in a victory over Martina Hingis in the French Open in June 1999.
