Biography
Born into a middle class family in Atlanta, Georgia on March 20, 1957, Spike Lee grew up in Brooklyn. His father is Bill Lee, an accomplished jazz bassist who scores many of Spike’s films. His mother, Jacqueline was an art teacher. They both were college graduates. Shelton Jackson Lee is Spike’s real name. ''I don't know why they call him Spike,'' says his maternal grandmother, Zimmie Shelton. ''I never liked it.'' The Lees moved to New York when Spike was two. By the age of five, his mother was taking him to movies and Broadway shows.
The Lees spent several summers with relatives in Alabama, and in those years, 1963-65, Lee came in contact with bigotry. He can remember separate bathrooms for blacks and whites. They moved into Cobble Hill, a white Brooklyn neighborhood, and Lee was called nigger. It didn't help that Lee was the littlest kid around. Being small and black and growing up in a white neighborhood caused Lee to be suspicious of everybody.
