Singer/songwriter Sheryl Crow's musical abilities followed a childhood of almost daily exposure to the piano and the trumpet. Her parents played in a swing band in Kennett, Missouri, with her father on trumpet and mother on piano. Crow started piano lessons at the age of four and it didn't take her long to play songs by ear. She listened to every kind of music in her household, but as she got older Crow was more influenced by country music and by rock artists who were influenced by country music, such as The Band, Derek and the Dominoes, Fleetwood Mac and Bob Dylan.

Crow describes herself as a nerdy sort who drifted in and out of high school bands before graduating from the University of Missouri with a degree in piano and voice in 1984. Her love of music led her to the University of Missouri, from which she graduated in 1984 with a degree in music education.
