Along with older sister Venus, Serena Williams forms one-half of the tennis duo that has taken the professional women’s tour by storm. With her impressive physical build, brash confidence and budding talent, Williams has caught the eye of fans and media alike. In 1999, she ranked as high as #9, following an upset victory over Steffi Graf at Indian Wells, ending Graf's finals win streak at 20. As an African-American, William’s celebrity has garnered lots of attention in a sport traditionally dominated by white athletes.
Williams was raised in Compton, California, a poor area overrun with crime and poverty. Her father, Richard, decided to raise all five of his daughters to become future tennis players. Serena and Venus took to the sport at a young age. Serena entered her first tournament at the age of four and a half.
