Scott Weiland is still officially a member of Stone Temple Pilots, though he has not performed with the band for several months. Weiland has had an ongoing problem with drugs that has finally resulted in his being sentenced to a year in jail.
Originally, Stone Temple Pilots were called Mighty Joe Young. They were discovered in San Diego by the manager of Nirvana. They are mistakenly thought of as part of the Seattle scene, The group actually performed mainly in the Los Angeles and San Diego area in the late 1980s. When they were ready to release their first album it was discovered that the name Mighty Joe Young was being used by someone else and Stone Temple Pilots came into being.
Their first album, Core, was released in 1992 and was immediately successful. The lyrics to one of the single tracks, "Sex Type Thing", was intended to be an anti-date rape song. The lyrics by Scott Weiland were instead interpreted as being pro-date rape and caused controvers...
