Canadian singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan has helped a new era of women musicians during the 1990s. Noted for the warmth she emits to the audience, and a voice that lures people right in, McLachlan’s 1994 Fumbling Toward Ecstasy album has established her as one of the predominant female musicians on the charts, a reputation she built on by assembling the popular Lilith Fair Music Festival in summer of 1997, featuring a strictly female bill.
McLachlan was adopted in 1968 by Jack and Dorice McLachlan, who also have two adopted sons. Her father was an American marine biologist, and both parents were jazz fans who also exposed their daughter to artists such as Simon and Garfunkel, Joan Baez, and Cat Stevens, which are her biggest influences.
