Sam Snead, a country boy, was born in Hot Springs, Virginia. He was nicknamed, Slammin' Sammy, for his powerful drives and naturally smooth swing. His legendary career included three Masters tournaments, three Professional Golfers' Association (PGA) titles and one British Open. He finished second in the U.S. Open four times but never won. He retired with more PGA tournament victories (84) than any golfer in history.
He became a professional in 1933 and scored his first victory in the 1937 at the Oakland Open in California. Snead is known worldwide for his straw hat. As far as anyone knows, Snead never had a golf lesson, and he sometimes used unusual methods of putting in order to remedy problems caused by a twitch.
Snead holds the Tour record for most victories in a single event with eight Greater Greensboro Open titles. He won this tournament in 1938, 1946, 1949, 1950, 1955, 1956, 1960 and 1965. When he won in 1965, he was 52 years old, making him the oldest player to win on the PGA Tour.
Snead was noted for the longevity of his career, his perfect swing and his agility. In 1980, he was one of the founders of the Senior PGA Tour. As a Senior his victories included winning the PGA Seniors' Championship six times and the World Seniors tournament five times.
Snead is credited with having 135 victories under his belt, but he claims the number is closer to 165. As the years pass, he spends more time fishing and hunting, and because of deteriorating eyes, and doesn't play golf as much as he'd like to.
