Biography
Robert Redford has one of the most diverse and distinguished careers in all of Hollywood. He has been revered for his acting in such films as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and All the President's Men, and as the director of such films as the Academy Award winner Ordinary People and Quiz Show. But perhaps Redford's greatest accomplishment is as creator of the Sundance Film Festival, the country's premiere independent film showcase.
Redford's path to Hollywood was rocky. Initially dismissed as nothing more than a pretty boy, it took Redford a while to gain attention as a serious actor. He started out in plays and was successful on Broadway, but when movies came calling, he appeared in dud after dud. Frustrated, he moved abroad to pursue painting. When Neil Simon asked him to reprise his theatre role in the film version of Barefoot in the Park, Redford returned to Hollywood and never left.
