Biography
Robert De Niro, Jr. was born to Robert De Niro, Sr., an abstract expressionist painter, and Virginia Painter, also an artist, on August 17, 1943 in New York City. He dropped out of high school to begin acting professionally and had several small parts in off-Broadway productions. His breakthrough came in 1973 with his performance in Mean Streets and, later, with his portrayal of a young Don Vito Corleone in The Godfather Part II (1974). This performance won him a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award and De Niro went on to have equally astonishing portrayals in Taxi Driver (1976), The Deer Hunter (1978), Raging Bull, (1980), The King of Comedy (1983), to name only a few of his earlier works.
