R. Kelly has moved from the projects of Chicago to the high rent district of Chicago. He is known for his sexually explicit lyrics and has drawn protests from women.

As a teenager, Kelly knew he did not want to be part of the growing gang population. When he was 13 he was shot in the shoulder when muggers stole his bicycle. His music teacher at the Kenwood Academy in Chicago, Lena McLin, recognized his musical talent and gave him training in classical music. He was soon singing classical arias as well as gospel with a storefront choir.

Kelly began his career as a street musician. Soon other street musicians gathered around him and the group MGM was born. The group sang on a local talent show and walked away with $100,000. Kelly's big break came when he auditioned for a gospel musical and came to the attention of Robert Hankerson.
