While most Americans may have been somewhat aware of him before his pelvis-thrusting, hip-swiveling performance on the 1999 Grammy Awards, Ricky Martin was already well-known to a most of the world. A showbiz veteran with some two decades of work to his credit for well over 20 years, Ricky Martin was born and raised in Puerto Rico. He began his career at the age of six appearing in locally-produced television commercials. After two unsuccessful tries (physically he was deemed too small and too baby-faced), he landed a gig with Menudo in 1983 despite his fathers objections.
