Biography
With several memorable film performances during the late 1990s, actor Philip Seymour Hoffman made the successful jump from stage to the big screen. His chameleon-like ability to transform into a wide range of roles was most apparent in 1999 when he starred as a transvestite in the film Flawless, an endearing nurse in Magnolia, and as a snobby playboy in The Talented Mr. Ripley, all roles for which he won critical acclaim.
Hoffman grew up in upstate New York, and began his acting career with a summer stint at the Circle Repertory Company in New York City. Deciding that he had a passion for acting, Hoffman enrolled at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, where he performed in various stage performances. The award-winning actor's film debut came in 1991 when he had a role in the film Triple Bogey on a Par 5 Hole, which lead to his first noticeable appearance in the film Scent of a Woman.
