Biography
Pavel Bure grew up around Olympic athletes. His father was an Olympic swimmer who was a rival of Mark Spitz in the 1972 Munich Games. Bure was taught to swim at the age of 2 and his father thought he had a future Olympic swimmer in his midst. Things changed when Bure saw kids playing hockey. He fell in love with the game and begged his father to let him play. His father took him to the exclusive Red Army Sports School and put him on the ice. He was the worst kid out there. He could hardly stand on his skates. A few weeks later Bure was the best kid on the ice. He had a natural talent and his career in hockey took off.
Bure was playing for the Red Army junior team when hockey in the Soviet Union started getting a taste of Glasnost. Players were allowed to leave for North America and his good friends and linemates Alexander Mogilny and Sergei Fedorov defected.
