Biography
Diva status has been given to many female singers, but one that truly deserves the title is Patti Labelle. The epitome of class and femininity, Labelle exudes an overwhelming presence both on stage and in person.
In the 1950s, Labelle began singing in her church choir at Beulah Baptist Church. Thereafter, in the 1960s, she, Cindy Birdsong, Nona Hendryx and Sarah Dash formed a singing group called the Ordettes. The group later called themselves Patti Labelle and the Blue Belles, and in 1967 shortened the name to Labelle. Labelle was famous for their outrageous costumes and for their #1 hit, "Lady Marmalade". In 1976, the group disbanded and Labelle was ready to launch her solo career. Regarding the split, she says, "It was time for us to part as singing partners while remaining friends…I was afraid of being blamed for the group's breakup, and I didn't know how people would respond to me as an artist on my own".
In 1977, she released her debut solo album...
