Mike Nichols may well be considered a renaissance man. He has proven himself as a first-rate director and one of the top actor's directors. His first two movies, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966) and The Graduate (1967), not only put to rest the concept that adult themes won't work in movie, but also helped define an entire generation. Nichols is also a successful producer, having won a Tony Award for his production of Annie, and a talented actor.
Nichols began directing on Broadway, earning Tony Awards in the 1960s for Barefoot in the Park, The Odd Couple, Plaza Suite and The Prisoner of Second Avenue. Turning his attention to the big screen, Nichols broke the rules of adult themes with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and followed up with a second Best Director Oscar for The Graduate, the movie that launched Dustin Hoffman into stardom.
