Born Maurice Joseph Micklewhite into poverty in 1933, the man who would later be known to millions as Michael Caine had an early start as an actor. As he recounts in his 1992 autobiography, Caine would lie to bill collectors who came to the family's home by saying his mother was not home. When he could afford it, the young Michael Caine would spend his time in the movie houses of South London.

In his early 20s, he changed his name to Michael Caine in tribute to his then favorite movie, The Caine Mutiny. He found work as a stage manager at a local repertory theater and began to hone his craft through bit parts and walk-on roles in film and television. His big break came in 1963 with Zulu. Thanks to that and many roles that followed, Caine would become one of the foremost action stars of the late 60s and 70s.
