Meryl Streep is widely regarded as one of America's finest actors, particularly for her ability to play a wide variety of roles and affect foreign accents. Her success, unusually, seemed to happen almost from her first appearance on stage.

Streep was born in New Jersey and appeared in musicals during her high school years, during which she gained an early start studying classical voice. She went on to Vassar College, graduating with a degree in English and drama, then gained her MFA at the prestigious Yale School of Drama. Directly after graduate school, she entered the New York Shakespeare Festival Theater, appearing in two plays her first year. Her immense talent was demonstrated by the fact that many attendees did not realize it was her in both plays. One of those roles, in 27 Wagons Full of Cotton, earned her a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress, an almost unprecedented feat for an actress in her first professional season....
