Born Norma Jean Mortensen, Monroe (whose studio later changed her name) was the illegitimate child of a man who ran off and left her mother before Norma Jean was born. During her childhood, Norma Jean suffered through a cycle of tragedy that included sexual abuse and the institutionalization of her mother after a nervous breakdown. She lived with strict foster parents after that, telling media later in life, "They were terribly strict... they didn't mean any harm... it was their religion. They brought me up harshly."
