LL Cool J has enjoyed a long-term career as a rapper in an industry that generally turns out short-term stars. Rapping since 1985, LL Cool J (whose musical moniker stands for "Ladies Love Cool James") has recorded eight albums, all of which have gone platinum. In addition, he boasts being the first rap artist to perform on MTV Unplugged and is quickly becoming a major movie presence.
Born James Todd Smith in Queens, New York, LL has been rapping since the age of nine. His grandparents raised him since his parents divorced around 1972. His grandfather encouraged his rapping by buying him a DJ system at the age of 11. Five years later, LL Cool J was sending out demo tapes. One of these caught the attention of a new label, Def Jam, run by Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin. In 1984, LL's "I Need A Beat" was released as their first single and sold over 100,000 copies.
