Although some view Leonardo DiCaprio as a young romantic heartthrob, he has demonstrated his ability as a serious and talented actor. DiCaprio started acting in commercials at the age of five. By his teens, he won roles in several sitcoms, including the popular hit series Growing Pains (1985).

In 1991, DiCaprio had his feature film debut in Critters III. At the age of 19, DiCaprio was chosen over four hundred others for a role opposite Robert De Niro in This Boy's Life. That same year he was cast as a mentally challenged youth in What's Eating Gilbert Grape? For his performance, DiCaprio was honored with Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actor.
