As long as Kristen Johnston can remember, she always wanted to go into acting. In grade school, she would participate in all of the play productions. In high school, not only did she participate in school productions, she also played an active part in the community theater. After high school, Johnston enrolled into New York University where she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA). During her college years, she maintained active participation in the theater. Having a few college productions on her back, she finally made her professional stage debut with the Atlantic Theatre Company. Johnston performed in various sorts of plays, but it was her performance in The Lights that brought her to the attention of a Carsey-Werner executive who was casting for 3rd Rock From the Sun. After a series of auditions, she landed the role of Sally Soloman.
