Kelly Clarkson, full name Kelly Brianne Clarkson, rose to stardom in 2002 by being the winner of the first "American Idol" contest. Born in Fort Worth, Texas, the singer and songwriter originally wanted to pursue a career in marine biology; however, urging from a school teacher prompted her to seek a singing career. Before competing in "American Idol," Clarkson attempted to break into the industry, but was largely unsuccessful. As a result, Clarkson returned to Texas and later auditioned for the televised competition.

Upon winning "American Idol," Clarkson was signed onto a recording contract and motion picture agreement with runner-up Justin Guarini.
