John Godina's aspirations as a world-class thrower began in high school, when he played football and threw on the track team. Even though he garnered All-America honors on the gridiron, the explosive hurler knew his future lay with the shot put and discus. This was reinforced when, as a senior, he tossed 63-1 with the shot and 175-9 with the international discus to win the USA Junior discus title and the Wyoming outstanding high school athlete of the year.

Godina redshirted his freshman year at UCLA but worked on his throwing in the meantime. His no-frills, intelligent disposition contributed to his solid improvement and he captured his first NCAA crown in 1994 with a personal record 68-8.75. Outdoors that year, Godina captured the NCAA discus crown but did not fare as well at the USA Championships.
