Biography
James Eugene Carrey was not born into an easy life. His father's career as a musician never really took off and, after losing his job as an accountant, Carrey's 15-year-old brother Jim had to step in to help provide for the family. It was not long before Carrey himself joined the work force. Working as a janitor at a factory both before and after school, Carrey became an angry and disenchanted young man. His gift was the ability to shield and channel his anger into comedy.
At about the same time he became a regular performer at Yuk Yuk's comedy club in Toronto. Dressed by his mother in yellow polyester, Carrey performed the Canadian comedy circuit from age 15 to 19. Like many entertainers, Carrey moved to Los Angeles to make his mark. Rodney Dangerfield is credited with discovering Carrey during his performance at Mitzi Shore's Comedy Store in Los Angeles. Later, Dangerfield brought Carrey on tour as his opener.
In the interim, Carrey performed at the Comedy Store and tried out for bit parts in movies. His big break came in 1990 with the hit Fox comedy show In Living Color. Carrey perfected characters such as Fire Marshall Bill and began to make a name for himself with both audiences and critics. 1994 brought Carrey big screen success with the two surprises hits of the year, Dumb and Dumber and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. Seemingly overnight, the man with the funny face became a hot commodity. With films like The Mask and Batman Forever under his belt, Carrey went on to earn a record-breaking $20 million for his role in 1996's The Cable Guy. Recently, Carrey won a 1999 Golden Globe for his critically acclaimed performance in The Truman Show.
