Biography
Jean Reno was born in 1948 in Casablanca, Morocco to Spanish parents who moved to North Africa to escape fascism. Reno moved to France after fulfilling his spell of military service in Germany, then settled in Paris at the age of 17. Here he began studying acting.
Reno joined a traveling theatre company and performed throughout France, making the jump to film with noted director Costa Gavras' Claire de Femme, but gaining the public's awareness in Luc Besson's more accessible Le Dernier Combat. A second outing with Besson, Subway, provided another brief part. But Besson and Reno formed a creative attachment and the director provided a breakout role, the second male lead, in The Big Blue, for which Reno received accolades from the critics. The next Besson-Reno teaming, La Femme Nikita, won over American audiences, making Reno's celebrity international.
