Jack Nicholson's breakthrough film role in 1969's Easy Rider began Hollywood's love affair with one of its quintessential bad boys. Although his notorious antics on and off the screen have sometimes overshadowed Nicholson's progression as a major force in American cinema, in thirty years he has grown from a B-movie actor to an accomplished star to a true pop culture icon.
Starting with Roger Corman's Cry Baby Killer (1958), Nicholson created a new kind of character, one that blended the masculinity of Bogart and Cagney with the neurosis and self-awareness of a new generation.
