Biography
Leonard Gary Oldman was born in a tough neighborhood in South London on March 21, 1958. His mother raised him when his alcoholic father walked out on the family around 1965. Oldman dropped out of school in 1974 to work in a sporting goods store, but later attended the Rose Bruford College of Speech and Drama, earning a BA in Theatre Arts in 1979. Oldman's early theatrical training was on the stage, performing with the Citizen's Theater in Glasgow, Scotland in 1980, after which he made his London stage debut with the Royal Court Theatre in 1985 in The Pope's Wedding.
In 1986, Oldman made his feature film debut, earning critical acclaim for his portrayal of heroin-addict punkrocker Sid Vicious in Sid and Nancy. Since then, Oldman has been known in Hollywood as being a virtual chameleon, capable of eerily portraying any character (such as Lee Harvey Oswald in JFK in 1991) and mimicking any accent (Texan in The Fifth Element, 1997 and Russian in Air Force One, 1998). Oldman has quite a collection of villainous roles under his belt: from the multi-faceted titular vampire in Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) to a Rastafarian pimp in True Romance (1993) to a Russian terrorist in Air Force One (1998). Despite the fact that he's so good at playing villains, Oldman admits that he would like to be offered a role in a romantic comedy.
In 1995, Oldman entered himself into rehab for alcoholism. Since then, he has stayed sober and broadened his resume to include directing and screenwriting. In 1997, Oldman released Nil by Mouth, a story about an abusive working-class London family that was based largely on his own upbringing.
