Biography
Born in Detroit, Michigan, director Francis Ford Coppola started his career as a soft porn director, and was later discovered by and apprenticed with Roger Corman. He went on to direct and produce numerous feature films. In 1970, he won an Oscar for his screenplay for Patton.
After the The huge success of The Godfather (1972), which established him as a major screenwriter and director, Coppola started his own production company and studios, American Zoetrope, but many of his subsequent movies fared poorly with critics and the public.
The monumental cost of Coppola’s Vietnam War epic, Apocalypse Now (1979), almost drove the director into bankruptcy. He would, however, finally recover and continue directing and producing his own films and backing projects of interest and influincing other filmmakers, such as George Lucas, John Milius, Willard Huyck and Gloria Katz Martin Scorsese and Brian De Palma
