Influenced greatly by the legendary Billie Holiday, Etta James in turn became an influence on many white blues-rock artists, most notably Janis Joplin, members of the Rolling Stones, and Rod Stewart. A young Jamesetta Hawkins began her long musical career as a child when she began performing with the St. Paul Baptist Church in her hometown of Los Angeles. By the time she was a teen, James was already performing in her own group called the Creolletes - later becoming the Peaches - and releasing several hit songs including "Dance With Me, Henry" in 1954.
It soon became apparent that James was the talent of the group, leading to her quitting the group to tour with some of the big names of the day, Little Richard and Chuck Berry. Being a minor and growing up in the wild times of the 1950s helped form her brazen attitude and passion for fast living that became her trademark.
