Born in England, Elizabeth Rosemond Taylor was a standout beauty that took Hollywood by storm at an early age. When the threat of World War II made her family move to Los Angeles in 1939, Taylor was discovered by a talent scout and made her first film, There's One Born Every Minute (1942) at the age of ten. That role led to a number of other films, including National Velvet (1944), which made her a child star. It wasn't until her role in George Stevens's Giant (1956), however, that Taylor achieved critical acclaim as a serious adult actress.
