Debra Denise Brown was Alton Coleman's young accomplice in a string of murders that happened in the Midwest in 1984 . Brown was the fifth child in eleven children altogether, and she came from a respectable home. She had been previously engaged to marry another man when she met Coleman and fell in love. Brown broke off her engagement, and became Coleman's live-in lover, and later went on the run from the law with him. In May of 1984, Vernita Wheat, age nine, convinced her mother to let her accompany "Robert Knight" a.k.a. Alton Coleman, and his girlfriend to Waukegan, fifteen miles from their home in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The purpose of the trip was to retrieve a stereo, described by Vernita Wheat and Knight as a belated Mother's Day present. When the three had not returned the next morning, officers were notified.
