Biography
Conrad Nicholas Hilton is the man behind the Hilton Hotel empire. Hilton's father, a Norwegian immigrant, converted part of the family's general store into a hotel in 1907, and Conrad purchased his first hotel 12 years later. He attended St. Michael's College in Santa Fe and the New Mexico School of Mining.
In 1912, Hilton was elected to serve a term in the first New Mexico state legislature. A year later he
opened the New Mexico State Bank but was considered too young to be chief executive officer, so he managed a music trio instead. In 1917, Hilton enlisted with the United States Army where he served as a lieutenant in the Quartermaster Corps of the American Expeditionary Force.
In 1925, Hilton built his first hotel, the Dallas Hilton. For the next five years, Hilton opened a new hotel every year, but had to close his El Paso location in 1931 due to financial difficulties. In 1946, the Hilton Hotels Corporation was formed and Hilton too...
