Biography
On October 11, 1968, Walter Cunningham blasted off with the crew of Apollo 7 as the lunar module pilot for the mission with crewmates Wally Schirra and Donn Eisele. The three men went on to send the first live television feed from outer space, which they called the Wally, Walt and Donn Show, and earned themselves a special Emmy Award that year.
Apollo 7 was the first manned space flight of the redesigned Apollo program. The first Apollo mission was a disaster when there was an explosion and fire on the launch pad, killing all three crewmembers. Cunningham had been on the backup crew for that mission.
The crew of Apollo 7 also made history by being the first to catch colds while in space. Because they were miserable for most of the flight, it was determined that they would not get another chance to fly in space. Apollo 7 was a major success, though, by all counts.
