In each of his movies so far, Christian Bale has used a different accent. Bale, a gifted, versatile actor who first came to popular attention in the Steven Spielberg film Empire of the Sun, has been hailed by Premiere magazine as "one of the hottest leading men under 30." In 1999, the Welsh-born actor will go from playing Christ in the television movie Mary and Jesus to a psychotic serial killer in American Psycho, the big screen adaptation Bret Easton Ellis’ controversial novel. Bale had originally won the role of Psycho’s serial killer Patrick Bateman only to lose it to Leonardo DiCaprio. The media had a field day when rumor spread that the Titanic star would be stepping into the shoes of violent yuppie Bateman, but DiCaprio soon backed out, putting Bale back in the driver’s seat.
