Cherilyn Sarkisian LaPierre (Cher), was born into a struggling lower-income family in El Centro, California. She dropped out of school to become a go-go dancer and met record producer Sonny Bono in 1964.

The two formed a popular singing duo whose big hit was "I Got You Babe". With the help of their talent and ambition, they landed a TV series in 1971 combining comedy and music. Soon after, Cher became disenchanted with Sonny's control over her career and by the time the series ended in 1974, they were divorced. Following a brief run with her own series, Cher once again teamed up with Bono for another similar series. This one lasted until 1977. Around this time Cher remarried, this time to musician Gregg Allman. Allman's drug problems created insurmountable tension in the marriage and they divorced.

By the time the 1980's came around, Sonny had moved on to a successful political career and Cher focused on acting. With roles in Silkwood and Mask, she won over the critics and was no longer considered a TV hasbeen. She became known and in some ways notorious for her over-the-top outfits which became an attraction unto themselves at events like the Academy Awards.

In recent years she has lost some of that Oscar shine with appearances on TV infomercials promoting everything from exercise equipment to beauty products. With her role in “Tea With Mussolini”, she looked to regain that shine.
