Biography
Growing up on Long Island, New York, Busta Rhymes (born Trevor Smith) started rapping at a young age, entering and winning rap contests during his early teens. Rhymes, with his rapid-fire rap style, quickly caught the attention of Chuck D, leader of the prominant rap group Public Enemy. By the time Rhymes was 17, he, along with his group The Leaders of the New School, were signed to a record contract with Elektra Records. At this time, Ryhmes dropped out of high school.
The Leaders of the New School released their first album in 1991, to some success. They followed it up with a second release two years later, which some critics felt was a rare case of a group’s sophomore release being better than the first.
