Bishop T.D. Jakes grew up in an entrepreneurial household, to which he attributes the phenomenal success of his Potter's House church ministry in Dallas, Texas. Jakes tries to instill the entrepreneurial spirit in his flock, all the while reaching out to those on the lowest rung of society: the drug addict, the alcoholic, the prostitute, and anyone else who is without hope. It was in nursing his father that Jakes says he learned his unprejudiced compassion for these people, who have even been overlooked by most churches.
NFL stars Deion Sanders and Emmitt Smith are among the people influenced enough by Jakes' preaching to donate time and money to the work. The Pentecostal minister has written 12 Christian bestsellers, produces a weekly TV show, made an award winning CD of music inspired by his most successful book (Woman, Thou Art Loosed: Healing the Wounds of the Past), and sells millions of video and audio tapes yearly. Jakes' ministry also supports community outreach programs that have earned him the respect and honor of the greater Dallas/Fort Worth Metro area's secular leaders, prompting them to give him the Key to the City in 1997. Jakes has also been criticized, not only for preaching prosperity, but also for openly living a very prosperous lifestyle. He makes no apologies, saying only that his flock needs a standard to emulate.
