Born October 10, 1960, Antonio Banderas, born Jose Antonio Banderas, grew up in Malaga, Spain. His father worked for Francisco Franco's secret police and his mother, Ana, worked as a teacher. Banderas wanted to play soccer professionally. His dream crashed when he broke his foot at 14 years old. After that he discovered acting, when he saw Hair in 1974.

Banderas parents strongly opposed his acting, but he could think of nothing else. He would sit for hours in front of the family's little black-and-white television. He started his career with the local theater at the age of fourteen. He studied the classics at the School of Dramatic Art in Malaga. He was always in a truck, traveling from little village to little village, performing. He learned to do everything - scenery, costumes, makeup, and lights. "It was wonderful," said Banderas.
