Andy Taylor grew up the eldest of four children in Cullercoats, England, in a house with an outside toilet and a tin bath. His father, a fisherman, encouraged Taylor at the age of 5 to begin guitar lessons. The young boy paid jazz musician Dave Black, who lived across the road, a pound per lesson. Taylor didn't really have his heart into the lessons until he was eleven, at which time his parents divorced.

Taylor left school at 16 and started working as a musician with punk band The Gigolos, who later became Motorway. In 1977, they were given a record deal with A&M records and released a single called "Teenage Girls" which never charted. He did gain experience, though, and had almost 600 gigs under his belt by the time he joined Duran Duran. At the start of the group in 1978, Taylor was the most experienced musician in the band.

Taylor met and fell for the band's hairdresser, Tracy Wilson, marrying her in Hollywood, California, while Duran Duran were on their American tour. John Taylor was his best man and Andy Taylor says that his bandmate "shook like a leaf" during the ceremony.

In addition to the success that Taylor enjoyed with Duran Duran, he was also sought out for collaboration by such artists as Belinda Carlisle, and Michael DeBarres. He also teamed up with fellow bandmate John Taylor, Robert Palmer, and others to form Power Station, which released their first album in 1985. The following year Taylor’s first solo single "Take It Easy" was released on the American Anthem soundtrack, followed by his first solo album, Thunder. In 1990, he signed a new deal with A&M and released his second solo album, Dangerous.

In 1996, Taylor went back into the studio with Power Station and recorded Living In Fear. He has now partnered with Luke Morley with whom he is doing a 1999 United Kingdom tour.
