Biography
Andy Taylor grew up the eldest of four children in Cullercoats, England, in a house with an outside toilet and a tin bath. His father, a fisherman, encouraged Taylor at the age of 5 to begin guitar lessons. The young boy paid jazz musician Dave Black, who lived across the road, a pound per lesson. Taylor didn't really have his heart into the lessons until he was eleven, at which time his parents divorced.
Taylor left school at 16 and started working as a musician with punk band The Gigolos, who later became Motorway. In 1977, they were given a record deal with A&M records and released a single called "Teenage Girls" which never charted. He did gain experience, though, and had almost 600 gigs under his belt by the time he joined Duran Duran. At the start of the group in 1978, Taylor was the most experienced musician in the band.
