Alex Rodriguez is already one of the best players in baseball, and he's only 24 years old. He broke into professional baseball at the tender age of 18, at a time when most people his age are just graduating from high school. Alex was obviously different from most other 18 year olds, and that came through quickly on the field. In his first complete major league season at the age of 21, and only his third professional season, Rodriguez batted .358, hit 36 home runs and drove in 123 runs. His average led the American League, as did his runs scored (141), total bases (379), grand slams (3) and doubles (54).
To top off all these accomplishments, he was doing this as a shortstop. The position of shorstop historically has been an "All Glove, No Bat" position, but Rodriguez, along with young counterparts in Nomar Garcipara (Boston) and Derek Jeter (New York), are quickly redefining the roles of the shortstop position. No shortstop had ever reached Rodriguez' totals in runs, hits, doubles, extra-base hits and slugging percentage. His total bases tied for the most ever by a shortstop. Rodriguez received several player-of-the-year awards in 1996, but he fell three points short of Juan Gonzalez for the coveted Most Valuable Player award. He might have cost himself the award by suggesting, when asked by some voting members of the Baseball Writers Association, that teammate Ken Griffey Jr., not he, was the MVP. Rodriguez' professionalism has earned him wide admiration from both the fans in the stands and his teammates on the field. He is a true All-Star on and off the field.
