With his flaming red hair and fu-manchu goatee, Alexi Lalas may appear a beatnik, completely out of place on a soccer field. But once he goes to work on defense, it becomes obvious that Lalas is no ordinary athlete. Eccentric, upbeat, and insightful, Lalas was the darling of the US men's soccer team that upset Colombia in the first round of the 1994 World Cup. Since then, he has helped to promote professional soccer in the US while maintaining his status as one of the best defenders in America, if not the world.

Lalas was born in the Detroit suburb of Royal Oak, Michigan. Following his parents' separation when he was six, he moved with his father to Greece. While abroad, Alexi learned soccer.
