Biography
Abimael Guzman, arrested by Peruvian police in 1992 and sentenced to life imprisonment for treason, has been the single most dangerous threat to the government of Peru since 1980. He is the founder of the notorious Shining Path, the Marxist rebels who continue to plague Peru even after their leader's arrest. In part, their continuing existence is due to Guzman, who organized the group into cells that could work independently, if necessary. Known for their violent attacks, assasinations and car bombings, Shining Path claimed over 25,000 lives before Guzman's capture.
Guzman himself does not look like a revolutionary. He is a rather pudgy man who wears glasses and looks for all the world like what he originally was -- a professor of philosophy. While teaching at Huamanga University in Ayacucho, one of Peru's poorest provinces, he began to formulate his revolutionary ideas, making two secret trips to China during the 1960s, where he reportedly studied the war doctrine...
